Al Church
Music: Just part of life
Early Notes: A Musical Beginning
Al Church was young when he got started with music. He remembers sitting down at the piano at about the age of eight. His grandmother noticed and gave him a guitar soon after that, and he began taking guitar lessons with one of his mom’s coworkers. Now, lots of kids are excited and eager at first, but for Al, music wasn’t just a phase. From then on it was part of his life.
Influences: Flannel, Feedback, and the 90s
Al’s sound is shaped by the raw, emotional energy of 90s rock. His influences include Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins—think distorted guitars, dynamic contrasts, catchy melodies, and maybe some gothic elements.
That spirit still runs through his songwriting today.
Live and Loud: The Joy of Performance
One of Al’s favorite musical traditions? Performing at the Minnesota State Fair.
Each year, during the final weekend, he joins a wide-ranging lineup of Twin Cities artists for a show that’s as challenging as it is fun. Experiencing the variety of musicians and their styles and genres is an experience that fosters new inspirations and ideas.
A Creative Philosophy: Embrace the Imperfection
Rather than viewing mistakes as disasters, Al considers them part of the moment. Being comfortable with his less-than-perfect allows his audience to relax, to see him as human, to be comfortable.
Collaboration & Community
Recently, Al collaborated with Tommy Stinson on a benefit record supporting Jesse Malin, a New York–based artist. He said the collaboration was not only a lot of fun but he also found it very meaningful to contribute to a worthy cause.
Looking Ahead: Creating for Others
While Al continues to write and perform his own music, he has other musical ambitions. In particular, he would like to produce and record more albums for other artists. For Al, the next creative step is to help someone else take theirs.
Featured Song: “You Don’t Have to Carry It All”
From his Party Sounds album, “You Don’t Have to Carry It All” is a standout track that reflects Al’s grounded, human approach to songwriting.
It’s a simple but powerful message, one that feels especially relevant in a world where everyone’s juggling more than they admit. The song leans into that emotional honesty without overcomplicating it…which, frankly, is harder than it sounds.
